Registration starts on both days at 7:30AM.  Shotgun start is 8:30AM.

Game is Best Ball of Foursome.  Maximum Handicap is 38.
Teams must sign up as foursomes and have verifiable handicaps.
Cost is $95.00 per player and includes range balls, golf, lunch and prizes.
The registration flyer has been emailed to all members with the August 16th Newsletter.

It's Manatee Cup Time!!

We'll start the first round on Thursday, August 7th during our regular League Play.

We'll send a separate email for you to sign up to play in this competitive opportunity.

What is the Manatee Cup?

Are you new to our chapter and want to know what this is?  Here's the scoop.  It's our own local Match Play Competition.  We started it 2 years ago and it's a fun event.  In the first round you will play match play against an opponent chosen using competitive criteria by the Organizing Committee.  You will play a 9 hole round against that competitor.  Instead of keeping an overall score for all the holes, you will compete for each hole.  The person who wins the most holes will advance to the next round.

Why play in the Manatee Cup?

It's a great introduction to Match Play which is quite a bit different than other competitive play.  It's a great chance to challenge your game.  It's fun and we have a great trophy that you get to keep and display for an entire year if you win the "Cup".

The winner is announced at our Fall Fling.

Look for the registration email this Sunday, August 3, 2014

News from the Manatee EWGA Education Committee

We're going to start sharing some tips about the Rules of Golf on the website and in the eblast.  If you have a question about rules you'd like to see answered, then email

Q:  With all the rain we've been having there is water in the fairways.  What do I do if my ball lands in it?
A:  You get free relief from casual water.  Any time your ball or your feet are in water you get a free drop.  Remember never closer to the pin but take complete relief.  Keep it in the Short Grass!

Q:  Can the flag be tended if I am playing from off the green.
A:  Yes, it may be tended.

Q:  If someone is standing close to the flag when I play from off the green are they considered tending the flag?
A:  Yes, they are and if your ball hits the flag it is a penalty for you.  So if you don't want it tended ask them to move away.

Q:  If my partner's putt is headed toward the flag lying on the green and I pick up the flagstick, is that legal?
Q:  The opponent or fellow competitor of B, removes the flagstick from the gole and places it on the ground.  B putts and A, who is standing within reach of the removed flagstick, realizes that B's ball might strike the removed the flagstick, so he picks up the flagstick.  What is the ruling?
A:  There is no penalty - see Rule 24-1.

Unlike many sports, golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire.  The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and to abide by the rules.  All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be.  This is the spirit of the game of Golf.

Some basic rules of Etiquette include:

Pace of Play:  Players should play at a good pace.  A good pace of play is 2 hours and 5 minutes for 9 holes and 4 hours and 10 minutes for 18 holes.

How do you keep up Pace of Play?  Play Ready Golf - Have your club selected and ready;  Keep up with the group in front of you; Watch your fellow players shots and help them find their ball;  Take only one practice swing;  Limit searching for balls to 5 minutes;  Play a provisional ball if you think the original ball might be lost;  Walk briskly and directly to your ball;  Leave your cell phone off or in the locker room.

We also have an opportunity for local golf courses to become "preferred courses" with special promotions to our members.  If you are a member of a course, or play at one frequently that you think would like to be promoted to our 100 members who play a lot of rounds of golf, let our sponsorship team know and we'll be in touch with the Course.

Our Chapter is about all of our members.  Carol Miers and her team of volunteers surveyed our members at our last two Social events and received some great input from you.

We've begun to implement some of the ideas and wanted to update you on them:

1.)  Prizes every week:  By a large margin, our members prefer having us award prizes for League on a weekly basis.  This is a policy we have implemented and will continue.
2.)  Scramble option is available to all:  While we run a "league game" every week, anyone who wants to play Scramble is welcome to register for Scramble.  As long as there is more than one person, we can have a Scramble Team.
3.) Pick Your Own Partner Once a Month:  We've instituted this and once a month the game will include the opportunity to pick your own partner.  For the other games we would like to encourage our Members to also make new friends and give new members a chance to meet and play with as many people as possible.  For this reason the majority of our games are randomly matched.

There were other items addressed in the surveys and Board continues to discuss those issues and our policies.  Anyone is welcome to attend a Board meeting and ask for any item to be added to the agenda.

Why every Golfer should have one and our Chapter's policy regarding Handicaps

This year at the Manatee EWGA we're gong to be encouraging all our members to take advantage of the EWGA system and get a USGA Handicap.  A handicap is required to compete in all Chapter events and to register for League.  If you do not have a handicap you can fill out the form with "nh - for no handicap" (see below for what this means).  Please do not put "n/a".  If you put "n/a" then we are going to count that as "nh".  We know this seems like minutia but it does matter when we are awarding prizes and it matters to everyone who runs the EWGA Events and League that all our members understand what we do and why we do it.

We also voted at the Board meeting to expand this policy so that we are going to require an established (and verifiable) handicap for all members and guests to be eligible to win prizes at our events.

Why this policy and what does it mean?

A handicap is meant to make the scoring in a game of golf more even and therefore more fair.  By knowing players handicaps the people awarding the prizes can "flight" a round so that the good golfers don't always win.  It means that someone with a 35 handicap can play someone with a 12 handicap (a much better golfer) and they can still play a competitive game and have fun.  If you don't have a handicap then those who are scoring can't give you any 'advantage' and you will never be a winner.

What if you fill out the form with "nh - no handicap"?

If you fill out the form with "nh" then two things will happen:
1.)  You will be given a "0" handicap.  This will mean you will get no advantage.
2.)  Our Handicap Chair (Jeannie Rieker) may contact you to try and help you get a handicap

What if you don't know your handicap or you don't have enough scores to report your handicap or you have another reason that having a handicap is just not something you can handle right now?

When you register just write "nh" but recent 9 hole scores were 75 and 62.  Or my recent 18 hole score was 145.  Our event coordinators can tell from this what your handicap might be.

There are some members who have established handicaps via systems other than the one provided on the Manatee EWGA website.   Those handicaps are also valid and can be used.  If you have questions about your handicap or how to use the EWGA System just ask.  Jeannie Rieker is our handicap chair and she can be reached at .

A USGA Handicap Index can be established with as few as five scores when you first join a club. As you continue posting scores, your handicap will be figured using the lowest 10 of your most recent 20 rounds.

Entering Scores on the EWGA Website

Go to and “sign in “ on the Upper right hand corner.    Your log in is your primary email address and your password.

You’ll get to the “member portal” page and on the left hand side is an option for “handicap”.

Click on Handicap and you’ll be taken to the handicap page where you can enter current scores and update information.      If you have trouble on the “left hand side” there is a link for “handicap/login support” or you can simply email

(IMPORTANT: Do NOT click on "Verify Handicap" at any time)
On the right hand side of the Handicap Page are red buttons.
Click on "Enter Score" (note the other items that can be checked as well)
Enter the date,
Enter the Course,
Enter whether you played 9 or 18 holes
Enter the tee played
Check any appropriate box (i.e. Tournament or Played with Member)
(Also note the "Helpful Links" section)
Enter your "Adjusted Gross Score" using Equitable Stroke Control and click "Post Score"
Review the information for accuracy and click "Confirm Score"
Click "Logout" when you are done.
If you are not able to Log In, you should click “forgot password,” check your email for the  new temporary password and try again – change your password once you have logged in.

If you still have problems logging in, you should email headquarters at
and explain the problem in your email.
